Before you get started you need to figure out the following:

Your country name then and now (may or may not be the same)
Where in the world your country is located (a continent helps, but neighbors are important too - remember that borders change [people don't, but that's a whole other project])
When your country was colonized (may be more than one period)
Who colonized your country (may be more than one colonizer)
How your country is doing these days - got Egypt???

Twitter: Use Kiosko.net above to find out the major news publications for your country, then follow those on Twitter (i.e.Al-Jazeera is @AJELive on Twitter).

Use the hashtag (#) to search Twitter (#syria for example) to identify keywords that will help you when you turn to the databases for research. Look at the example below, and the the following list of keywords, which are taken straight from the search in the screenshot.

Check user activity (for example, as of this writing, the most recent Egypt article editors include a person who mostly edits movies, and a person who mostly edits foreign policy articles - which one are you going to trust more? BTW, you can't answer that question based on the provided information. The foreign policy editor might be completely biased whereas the person who just edited Lilo and Stitch might have spent the last two weeks among protesters. Who knows? - You have to carefully review the edits to find out!)

Look up "Decades Project AND 1960s" (or whatever decade you are working on in the online catalog.

Reference Books:

TimeTables of American History breaks down each year according to PERSIA +GT

Timetables of World History is good too, in case you can't get your hands on the first - I know this is a U.S. class, but world affairs apply too!

1960s, 1970s, 1980s, etc. books are very helpful. Use them. They are stored on a cart near the back window in the green dot computer section of the library.

Atlas of the Baby Boom Generation: A Cultural History of Postwar America is an excellent resource that covers the 1960s through the 1990s and includes graphs, trends, statistics, etc. for each decade.

American Decades (both in hard copy, and in eBook format in the Gale Virtual Reference Library) - You can search the book electronically by choosing the delimiter source and adding the title "American Decades" then searching for your term/decade.

Decades Day by Day series will be helpful too - tons of detail, literally, one day at a time. There is a volume for each decade (REF 909.82).

For biographical information, use the Biography in Context. I shouldn't see you on Wikipedia at all for this. You have access to amazing databases for this project.

Annotated bibliography:

In addition to the complete bibliographical information (author, title, publisher and date, etc) - feel free to use EasyBib, NoodleTools, or BibMe for this, an entry in an annotated bibliography (150 words or less) should include at least four of the following:

Author: Authority, experience, or qualifications of the author

Purpose: Why did the author write this?

Scope: Breadth or depth of coverage (Is this work very in-depth? Does it cover a wide range of topics?), topics included, etc.

Audience: For whom was it written (general public, subject specialists, students…)?

Viewpoint: What is the author’s perspective or approach (school of thought, etc.)? Do you detect an unacknowledged bias, or find any undefended assumptions?

Sources: Does the author cite other sources? Is it based on the author’s own research? Is it personal opinion? …

Conclusion: What does the author conclude. Is the conclusion justified by the work?

Features: Any significant extras, e.g. visual aids (charts, maps, etc.), reprints of source documents, an annotated bibliography

Comparison: How does it relate to other works on the topic: does it agree or disagree with another author or a particular school of thought; are there other works which would support or dispute it? (How to Write)

Reliability and date: How up-to-date is the resource and how do you know it is reliable?

An annotation is evaluative. In addition to a description, it offers a brief critical assessment of the publication, assessing its relevance, accuracy, reliability, or usefulness for a particular audience or purpose.

What you need to do next is learn about what's happening right now in your state. Do a Twitter search for #connecticut or #alaska, or whatever sate you are investigating, You'll find you what is happening right now in your state.

Then go to the media. You can do a location search in Newsstand. That's your best bet. It's a Gale database, so there is an app for that. You can do it on a IOS or Droid device. All app tutorials are in the left sidebar.

Use the advanced search field and do a location search for your state. Add a search term prompted by your Twitter search, and learn more!

Period 4	Democrat	Tennessee	I would like to address the national issue of gun control because in TN republicans agree that everyone should have the right to bear arms but not all democrats agree. There are many twists and turns as to who can be in the possession of arms and also where you can be in possession of them. TN's policies are different from other states' so I think that the nation needs to address the differences between other state policies.
Period 4	Democrat	Missouri	Missouri has the highest Meth Lab busts in the country. In 2011, 2,096 meth labs were seized. In St. Louis, the number of labs increased sixfold. Many of these meth labs are small and it's quickly prepared with a "shake-and-bake" method in a plastic soda bottle, they're more common then large meth labs. One main ingredient needed is pseudo ephedrine, which is available in over the counter drugs. There has to be an increase in protection of selling these specific types of drugs and furthermore and increase in the overall police force that's stopping these labs.

Period 4	Independent	New York	Legalization of gay marriage. New York is the newest state to offer full-fledged gay marriage. The issue of same-sex marriage is an extremely controversial and much-talked about topic in national politics today. It's an issue of civil rights and should be fought for with great seriousness.
Period 4	Democrat	Arkansas	Education Reform. Arkansas has one of the highest populations of high school dropouts as well as one of the lowest rates of people with bachelors degree.
Period 4	Republican	South Carolina	An extremely hot topic right now for south carolina and other states is their stand on illegal immigration. I was reading an article for the new york times and saw that the current state officials are heading in a similar direction that alabama and arizona have gone. Although Judge Gergel decided against the proposition to making it a necessity for people looking Hispanic or having an "illegal" appearance to carry their papers with them. If the Supreme Court allows the law to pass then south carolina will most likely follow suit.

Remember what we said about keywords? Avoid the word "panic" in your primary source searches, and look up info on banking, Federal Reserve, Securities and Exchange Commission, presidents, cabinet members, legislators, Supreme Court cases, justices, etc...

Hands-down: The MOST POPULAR resources for this project are the American Eras/American Decades (REF 973) reference books. They are organized, more or less, according to PERSIA+GT, which makes life uber-easy for you guys. They are AVAILABLE ONLINE! You can access them under the Digital Resources tab in Destiny, the Gale Virtual Reference Library database and in a more erratic fashion, in the History in Context database.

While many teachers approach this project differently, there are some things that apply universally. Hopefully, I have had a chance to visit your class during the early stages of the project. Please contact me or message me if you have questions!

You should know by now that Destiny is our portal for all electronic content, including databases!

You MUST log in to access electronic resources!

If you are not certain how to access resources in the catalog, please watch the introductory video (with Peter Reinhardt's music).
In class, I stressed the importance of toggling between the three tabs to locate print books (Library Titles), databases (OneSearch), eBooks (Digital Resources).

It is also important to adjust your search according to collection size. We have 28,000 print books, 70 databases, and 1,400 eBooks. Clearly you will need a much broader search to locate eBooks, than databases.

For example:
Immigration turns up 321 print books, an unwieldy number of database results, and 71 eBooks. It is too broad a search term for any of the three, but changing your search to Irish Immigrants will take your number of digital resource results down to one. We have many more eBooks that cover Irish immigrants that that, they just haven't been tagged (cataloged in library world) as such (yet).

We are trying to add subjects to the eBooks as fast as we can, but we are a little behind.

Databases:

We no longer subscribe to ProQuest Platinum, but we do have ProQuest National Newspapers, (12 national news publications from the early-mid eighties on).
If you are looking for magazines, use Newsstand. It indexes thousands of periodicals, including several international publications.
If you are looking for a global perspective on an issue, use Global Issues in Context. If you want viewpoint essays on controversial topics, use Opposing Viewpoints in Context.

Class-specific resources:
Each teacher approaches this project a little differently. What follows are some notes that will help students explore the topic they have been assigned.

AMSTUD (wars in Iraq and Afghanistan):

ABC-CLIO has an overview database you might find helpful as a reference - World at War (This is database - refer to database page if you can't remember UN & PW)
For video resources, Frontline, (PBS show) is excellent! They have oodles of episodes on the topic. Check out the Topics button - there is one for each war! Use can also use the search field and explore!

If our NCHS career as partners in learning was a book that was segmented in to parts, this project would mark the beginning of Part II. Part I is about learning how to access your library's services. Part II is about the research process. There is a video below that is worth the 7 1/2 minutes. It describes the beauty of running into obstacles while researching. These instances present opportunities, not setbacks. They prompt you to ask, "What am I really looking for?" This should help you refocus, and perhaps redirect your research.

Was Napoleon guilty of crimes against humanity?

You will need to research two areas:

1) Napoleon, his objectives, his motivation, his programs, his reforms, his empire - loosely, the impact of the Napoleonic Empire on the global community, and the more localized, French community

Note about primary sources: Working with one student, we were able to locate articles about Venezuela from different decades, and piece together a chronology of socio-political developments over time out of primary sources - very cool. Another student located a 1936 book that contained a letter at the East Hartford Public Library using the state-wide online card catalog. The reference librarian there is faxing her what she needs. Be proactive. Be resourceful. Plan ahead. Ask questions! Use the forum in the Moodle to collaborate with classmates and post questions to my email.

This is a super exciting project for your librarians :-)

Seriously, we added a whole collection of disaster-related resources a few years back and then the project we bought them for was dropped :-(

But now... we have Mr. Staffaroni :-)

And we can examine disasters again :-))

So how do we access all these resources?

Destiny, the online catalog is a great starting place

There are lots and lots of new features in Destiny this year - Namely, we grouped our eBooks under a different tab - very helpful in filtering out what you cannot access, depending on whether you are physically here in school or not.

Also, there is what folks call a federated search tab (OneSearch), which sifts through our databases in one fell swoop and returns results based on your inquiry. It's still a little buggy, but we are working on it.

So that's the good news. Here is the important piece. YOU MUST LOG IN to access these resources! Use the same user name and password you use to access the schooo network on any computer in the building.

What foods make up the traditional diet of your assigned country? (database and print resources)
Compare the traditional diet of the region/country to the diet of your assigned family. In what ways are they similar? different? How can you account for the differences?What does the diet of the family reveal about their lives? In what ways has agriculture shaped their diet and lives? What does it reveal about the familyâ€™s connection to markets and trade networks?

Use the online catalog for this project. Seriously. Start there! You may have avoided this all year, but now it's time to bite the bullet and use the catalog. Here is why:

We've been doing this project for a decade, and we have hand-picked and cataloged a broad spectrum of resources.

So when your search turns up a weird list like this, TRUST us. Those books were indexed with the "global Pitch" subject for a reason.

We have not just identified books in the system, but there are a plethora of relevant eBooks, movies, and websites indexed in the catalog and that is the only way for you to locate and retrieve them.

Once you retrieve print books, please please place them on the "Global Pitch" shelf at the end of the period. Print books are on overnight loan. You can borrow them at 2PM, but they need to be checked back in by 7:30AM the next day. You will accrue fines of $.25 per late class period. Every freshman class will be working on this project over the next few weeks, so we will be strict about getting materials back on time. This is also why we have so many eBooks.

Keep track of your sources! Do not copy and past just a link - particularly for databases, because those links will no longer work after you log out. Start your bibliography on day one!!!!!

We created a document with these and the other questions from your assignment. You will need to Copy, Rename it, Share and Save the document (CRiSS). Instructions follow.
