You will need to investigate the impact of railroads in late 19th century America on one of the following subcultures. Before you start, stop and think. Do some guess work. Without knowing anything at all, speculate about each of these categories.... What do you think the impact of railroads might have been on...

  • Labor Unions (Rail strike of 1877, Pullman Strike)
  • Native Americans
  • Farmer (econ, politics, Grange, populism)
  • Urbanization of America
  • Sport (esp. baseball)
  • Cattle Kingdom and the role of women in the west
  • Supreme Court (esp. Munn v. Illinois, Plessy v. Ferguson)
  • Political (Credit Mobilier, Jay Gould, Jim Fisk)
  • Development of Monopolies (Morgan, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt)
  • Technology (Electricity, Bessemer Process, Refrigerated Car, Westinghouse Air Brake, barbed wire, etc.)
